Explain your art to your parents

This short film is part of a nine-part documentary series made by directors and artists Lernert Engelberts and Sander Plug. In each a different contemporary artist (read: abstract or conceptual artist) is asked to explain to their mother or father what their art is all about. This is the first part of the series and unfortunately it is the only one with English subtitles I could find. It is, however, a very good example of what the series has in store. Here, conceptual artist Arno Coenen, who’s art consists in brewing beer, talks to his father. We don’t really learn all that much about the art of Coenen, but by the end of this very moving but also humorous little film, we have learned a lot about the relationship between this father and son.

If you want want to see the other 8 parts of the series (no subtitles, unfortunately) you can go to Limboland.tv. If you want to know more about the work of Lernert en Sander, visit their site: We Love Our Work.

Fantastic piece and I love how the setting refers Dutch still life paintings. Both of them revealed so much more than they intended, I suspect.

In some of the other films in the series the artists get angry because the parent is soooo kind and soooo tolerant and soooo understanding... I guess it's hard being the mom or dad of an artist. :)

By the way: I spent a good quarter of an hour on your site and blog.( http://kirstyhall.co.uk/ ) I had to pry myself away because I was going to ruin my whole afternoon there if I wasn't careful. Interesting stuff. Will come back to it...
