Tadahiro Uesugi

b

The strange thing about Tadahiro Uesugi is the amount of people who have never heard of him… His work (and there is lots and lots of it!) has appeared in high profile magazines like Vogue and Cosmopolitan, on book covers, CD’s and what not. But still, whenever I mention the name to some one, they often get a puzzled look on their face. Usually the frown disappears the minute they see the work itself…

Uesugi is a master of mood and light. When his scenes are not set in Japan, they often depict a sunny afternoon in some stylish European city, somewhere in the 50’s or 60’s. Nevertheless, almost everything is done digitally. Presented here is only a little selection of his work: The highly stylized retro stuff but also earlier work, which is a bit rougher and cartoony, but also very nice, and some pieces he did most recently as a concept artist for the Coraline movie.

Visit the site of Tadahiro Uesugi if you want to spend some time looking through the staggering amount of beautiful illustrations you can find there. It is all in Japanese, but that should be no problem. There is also a short video with Uesugi, Ronnie Del Carmen and Enrique Casarosa you can see here. They did an exhibition together and talk a little about each others work. Unfortunately Uesugi speaks Japanese and the video only has French subtitles.

See? What did I say... :)

Glad you liked it, Zenu.
Hi Gilliom,

Thanks for sharing this, I also didn't know about Uesugi although his ladies made me think of Kiraz. Kiraz's style is less poetic and more fashion-oriented (http://kiraz-artworks.com/), but they share a few similarities including working for fashion magazines. Kiraz is quite famous in France, especially for his Parisiennes (Parisian ladies). Would love your opinion on this.

Best, Youmna

There you go : Kiraz is completely new to me! I had never heard about him. And he does seem to be quite famous. There sure are a lot of books with his work.

I must say I'm not very fond of his work. I've checked his site and almost every picture I saw, my eye fell immediately on some flaw in the drawing, something going wrong with the perspective, or some anatomical strangeness...

Nevertheless, thank you for sharing the link, Youmna. I am always interested in learning about some illustrator I didn't know about so if some future post inspires you to send another, please don't hesitate...

All the best.

I too love his drawings just discovered today. I feel like I need to print out every single one I can find stick them all up on a wall and sit and look at them for a very long time. My eyes can't get full enough of their simplicity and ease. Each girl insouciant as she moves so gracefully. Truly beautiful.
