Retroïsm

file_35_9

Nice work in this exhibition at the Retrospect Galleries in Byron Bay, Australia featuring playfully nostalgic pop and retro art by 12 hand-picked internationally renowned, mixed media artists (Sunny Belliston, Eva Eun-Sil Han, Handiedan, Tez Humphreys, Robert Mars, Nick Morris, Julien Pacaud, Kareem Rizk, Mario Wagner, Charles Wilkin, Cecil Touchon and Eduardo Recife).

If you like to go, it started from the 21st of May and runs ‘till the 7th of June 2010. Australia is just a tad out of my way, so I wont be going myself. If you are in a similar predicament you could check out their website where a lot of the work is on display. Go to www.retrospectgalleries.com

N-L T(4): Ahn Sang-soo

sb4a9596c914a2a

Ahn Sang-soo has been called the most innovative designer in contemporary Korea. Early on he focused on western-language design but then he discovered the beauty of Hangul, the native alphabet of the Korean language. He developed the first ever “out-of-frame” Hangul typeface, revolutionizing Korean typography by stretching the legibility of the characters and, like a poet, make the letters “work” harder by piling on more and more meaning or “unburdening” them of meaning. On the other hand, he also explores the functionality of the alphabet by researching and improving typography in middle school textbooks and the readability of newspaper typefaces.

Ahn Sang-soo is not only a designer but also a poet, a philosopher and linguist and a tireless educator, lecturer and curator of exhibitions. Check out more of his work at the Ahn Graphics site or read about his work an the Hangul alphabet in this article from the Theme Magazine site.

Have you ever seen…

“Avez-vous déjà vu…?” is a series of very short animation films, each about 45 seconds or so, made by Pierre Alain Bloch and narrated by Alain Chabat. They are all in French, but some of them are perfectly understandable whether you speak French or not and I even found one with subtitles (one that doesn’t really need it at all, but, well, alors, ça va?…). If you like them, you are in for a real treat, because there are a whole lot of them: 150 episodes in total. I’ve selected three of them to wet your appetite…Enjoy.

Have you ever seen… a not so perfect crime?

Have you ever seen… a yoghurt singing Opera?

Have you ever seen…the cell phone elf?

You can find all of the episodes on this blog : avezvous-deja-vu.skyrock.com/ or on YouTube… And can somebody please translate the bunch? Thank you.

Comics: Brecht Evens (2)

I posted about Brecht Evens a while back but now seemed like a good time to do it again. First of all, Brecht just won an important Belgo-Dutch comic award, the “Willy Vandersteen-prijs” and secondly, his beautiful book “Ergens waar je niet wilt zijn” will soon come out in English as “The wrong place”. It was already available in French where it is called “Les noceurs”, and a German and Spanish translation is in the making.

The Willy Vandersteen-prijs is new. Evens is the first one to receive it. It is an initiative of the Belgian comics festival in Turnhout, the Dutch comics festival Stripdagen Haarlem and the Flemish-Dutch house “deBuren” in Brussels. It is awarded every two years to the best Dutch-language album (Both Dutch and Flemish people speak Dutch.) and the winner gets 5000 euro and a travelling exhibition about the album gets made. As far as I know it is the most important and prestigious comic award in our language.

Let me take this opportunity to also say something about this “Willy Vandersteen”. Not everybody will agree with me, but in my opinion he is the quintessential Belgian (Flemish) creator of comics. Yes, far more so than Hergé, who is, of course, a lot more famous worldwide. Vandersteen however, created with “Suske and Wiske” (AKA Bob and Bobette, Willy and Wanda or Spike and Suzy) a series of comic books which became part of the cultural inheritance of the Flemish people. Even my mother, who hasn’t read a comic book in her entire life, can quote from the series. Remind me to do a more extensive blogpost about him, sometime in the future.

But back to Brecht Evens… The English translation of his book is due out somewhere in June and I assure you, this is one graphic novel you can not afford to miss. Just take a look at some of the gorgeous, luminous artwork and illustrations Mr Evens makes. Check out his blog or visit the Drawn & Quarterly website.
