The Yard (1)

This post needs a little introduction…

 

I found this video quite some time ago, but always refrained from posting it, figuring it didn’t belong here since it had nothing to do with illustration or graphic design. Every once in a while I would come across the bookmarked video, watch it again and decide not to post it, again.

 

 

So what changed? Why did I obviously decide to post it this time?

Nothing changed.

I changed my mind. That’s it.

Prerogative of the wise, someone once said. (Or did I just made that up?)

 

 

Instead of making a problem out of it, I decided to make it into something new. A new series, called “The Yard” in which this is the first post.

Why the yard? Two reasons.

I found this video on a blog called “The Selvedge Yard”, a site dedicated to all kinds of stuff ranging from the suits of Miles Davis and a car chase of Steve McQueen to the cool of Bruce Lee, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and bikini clad Hell’s Angels girls. So it’s a little nod to that site.

Secondly, a yard is a place to play. To take a break from business as usual. To step out and have a smoke.

So there you go.

Welcome to the yard…

Studio Visit (18): Pascal Campion 12:12

 

 

 

Campion is a French-American illustrator and animator.  This video is an amazing look into his way of working. I found it at Thunder Chunky where you can also find an extensive interview with the man (here). Check it all out, spend some time with this guy and his work, I’m telling you, you wont be sorry. He is a master at storytelling-through-images and his outlook on life and work are going to inspire you right out of your socks…

Nova: a DIY docu on new art 11:13

 

A full length documentary on new art and the artists behind it. Yes, it is over an hour long, so you are going to have to put that so called “work” you were doing aside for a while now…

I enjoyed this docu very much. Not every single artist presented here makes work that I particularly like, but the things these people have to say about their approach to art-making in this day and age, I think, are very interesting.

 

 

The film was directed by Isaac Niemand and produced by ROJO. It was all filmed at Nova Contemporary Culture in July and August 2010 in the MIS-Museum of Image and Sound, and SESC Pompeia, in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Triboro Leftovers 11:38

 

 

 

 

 

 

What a splendid idea!

Triboro Design Solutions (a husband and wife team consisting of David Heasty (the husband) and Stefanie Weigler (the wife)) don’t just publish the final results of their work for different clients on their portfolio site, they also have a special section called Triboro Leftovers where they showcase, well, the “leftovers”: type treatments, photos, sketches, illustrations, etc… They stripped the pieces of their original context and meaning so they become “remixes” which are able to stand on their own.

They would like to create different volumes of leftovers, each with a cohesive mood or feel. At this point, they only have one volume, but this sure has a lot of nice stuff in it. Take a look at some examples here, or check out the complete Volume 1 of Triboro Leftovers on their site.

Patrick Doyon: Sunday 11:46

 

Canadian Patrick Doyon is an illustrator who makes animations as well. Or is he an animator who makes illustrations on the side?

 

 

His new animated short “Sunday” has received a Special Mention at the 61ste edition of the Berlin International Film Festival.

 

 

I love the very simple but expressive drawing style which make the illustrations clear and readable.

Calligraphy: Massimo Polello 10:31

 

 

Massimo Polello is an Italian calligrapher, based in Turin. He works on designs for packaging, logotypes and publishing, but also did numerous commissions of calligraphic works in large sizes on floors and walls for public art exhibitions. He collaborates with museums, organizing exhibitions and doing workshops and seminars. In 2007 he worked with artist/filmmaker Peter Greenaway on the video installation “Peopling the Palace”and he is a member of the “Doigts Noir” (Black Fingers), an international group op calligrapher-artist professionals.

(Oh, what I wouldn’t give to be a member of an organization called “Doigts Noir”….)
