Font Generator Prototyp-O

Magical Snap - 2011.07.15 17.10 - 004

A web-application, built on the Processing language (see: processing.org ) by a student from the “Arts Décoratifs” in Strazbourg,  Yannick Mathey, intended to design letterforms. Explaining it would take far too long. Just take a look at the video to see how fiddling with the different parameters changes the attributes of the letters.

Yannick explains (in the comments on the Vimeo-pages) that of course he didn’t intend to replace the type designer, yet his app is designed to facilitate experimentation. For every parameter markers are set up to indicate trespassing the rules of what is commonly considered good design, yet the markers are also there to be crossed, opening up the possibilities to generate extraordinary forms.

Magical Snap - 2011.07.15 17.12 - 005

If you are interested in following the development of the app, you can subscribe to a newsletter on byte-foundry.com or you can follow @bytefoundry on twitter.

If you speak French, you can read an extensive interview with Yannick Mathey on CG-Blog, where I found this.

(And if you didn’t know: CG-Blog also did a rather nice interview with yours truly, a while ago, which is also available in English. Go check it out! )

Stuxnet: Anatomy of a computer virus is a gorgeous infographic/motion graphic video. Changes are you’ve seen it around before, I know, but it was just too nice not to post…

Nokia Pure Typeface Video

Magical Snap - 2011.04.11 10.36 - 005

I saw this video on a Monday morning and even then I couldn’t be fooled by it… Sure, it’s probably a nice typeface, but was it absolutely necessary to jump on board of the “letterpress-revival” just to pretend to be (here comes the magic word)  “authentic”. Ooooh, we are so “authentic”. Look at us!

Please.

I’m getting a bit tired of “authentic”. Can’t somebody claim to be fake for a change?

The video was made by Build. The typeface created by Dalton Maag. The letterpress run by paekakarikipress.

Faceout Books

IMG_7013_0383_2

A blog dedicated to book cover design with lots of great work but also interesting interviews with the designers behind the projects.

Administrator Charles Brock describes the purpose of Faceout Books as follows:

This venue has been created to appreciate the practice of book cover design. This is not a blog to rip apart what we dislike—everyone has a different aesthetic. This is a blog about the challenges and outcomes of a project. We are here to teach and be taught by one another.

Do spent some time at Faceoutbooks.com…

Call of Duty – Black Ops

I’m not into videogames at all, don’t know anything about them, really. But when I saw this trailer for the Call of Duty – Black Ops game I was pleasantly surprised about the nice retro-graphics and “cold war era”-feel this thing has got going…

Gastrotypographicalassemblage

Kemistry Gallery in London has been exhibiting the work of legendary designer Lou Dorfsman, art director for CBS network.  The exhibition centers on his most notable creation, the 11 meter wide handmade wooden typographic wall that he named Gastrotypographicalassemblage. With custom type created by Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase, the wall contains almost 1500 individual characters.

The exhibition closed at the end of October. Well… it was a bit far for me anyway…

Signage & Polaroid Negatives

This is the work of Craig Crutchfield. He wants to document old signage, afraid that soon they will all be gone. To do so, he uses the negatives from Polaroid films, the part that is usually thrown away. Good concept. Nice results.

Check out his set on Flickr for the full experience…

Telephoneme - MK12

Inspired by educational films from the 50’s and 60’s. Part live-action, part animation. Strange. Beautiful. About the science of the alphabet and hidden messages carried by language (apparently…). Made by design collective MK12. With its own typeface.

TypoElements 2010

It’s been a while since we’ve had some kinetic typography on Monsieur Bandit. This one is very short, just one minute, but it’s a complete crash-course in typography basics. It was made by Chris Kim from Toronto and intended as a tribute to Robert Bringhurst’s book “The Elements of Typographic Style”.

Street art: Remed

Unusual street art by this “French artist out of Madrid“ (Yeah, I’m not quite sure how that works, either….) Bold forms, either bright colors or stark black and white, on walls (inside or out), on canvas, on paper or in 3D. Sometimes huge, sometimes not. Hand drawn typography. Lots of collaborations. Influences from early NY graffiti to Art Nouveau (or so I’m told….)

Check out Remed.
