It’s been a while since we’ve had some kinetic typography on Monsieur Bandit. This one is very short, just one minute, but it’s a complete crash-course in typography basics. It was made by Chris Kim from Toronto and intended as a tribute to Robert Bringhurst’s book “The Elements of Typographic Style”.

Marcel Duchamp documentary 12:05

I have some kind of love/hate relationship with Marcel Duchamp. At times I have thought he was solely responsible for the emergence of all those way-too-clever artists with their incomprehensible theories which are supposed to validate their boring “conceptual” (spitting out the word) pieces and their “irony” (spitting again), ooooh, “irony” (almost choking now), don’t get me started on that so called …. uuurgh!

(Yes, I realize the above sentence was not exactly the most eloquent phrasing of my sentiments towards Duchamp and contemporary art. I really should learn to constrain these outburst, shouldn’t I?)

Anyway…

On the other hand Duchamp is a brilliant artist, of course. He’s fun and a joy to behold. In this documentary we hear him talk about his own work, in his own words…

Born in Poland, studied in Germany where he now works and lives. Roman Klonek loves old fashioned East European cartoons and developed a passion for woodcut printing. In his work there are echo's of propaganda, folklore and pop.

Zimoun – Sound Sculptures 12:06

Zimoun’s sound sculptures are described as graceful, mechanized works of playful poetry. He often makes simple constructions in large series, objects becoming moving patterns and generating sound.

What strikes me is how beautiful these look on film. Sometimes the little mechanical things seem almost ethereal. But when the camera pulls back a whole different reality is revealed. Take for instance the set up of the installation you can see at the 4:45 mark, and compare this with the images that came before. Sometimes you would think these things are made to exist on film, rather than in real life.

Metamorphosis 11:23

I’ve always been fascinated by Ovid’s classic “Metamorphoses”. It’s any image-makers dream come true, filed with wonderfully strange and impossible transformations, creatures and mythological beings.

More than any drawings or paintings I’ve seen, these photographs by Fréderic Fontenoy seem to capture the strange blend of violence and vulnerability that is to be found in these stories. And if you think these are “just” photoshopped images, apparently they are “real” pictures, all on one photo and made between 1988 and 1990, that’s over 20 years ago.
