Comics: Brecht Evens 19:31

Highly talented, young, looks and attitude of a rock star. And what does he do with his life? He starts drawing comic books! Comic books, I mean…tsss.
Flemish comic book creator Brecht Evens and his “Ergens waar je niet wilt zijn” got lots and lots of attention at the previous Angouleme comics festival. The French translation, “Les Noceurs”, published by Actes Sud is now available. An English edition “The Wrong Place”, to be published by Drawn & Quarterly, is on its way. It should hit the shops by march 2010.
This is the good stuff. Keep an eye out for this guy.

Comics: Bob Dylan Revisited 01:37

 

 

This book has almost everything going against it, in my opinion.

I’m not a Bob Dylan fan, I don’t really like anthologies and I think the idea of taking the lyrics from a song as the text for each “story” and then illustrating it, is no good.

Still, some of the illustrators in here belong to my all-time-favorites-list, so I couldn’t leave it in the comic bookstore.

So I won’t read it. I’ll just look at the pictures.

Showcase: Bronks 15:19

  

Bronks is a Flemish theatre company for children. Somehow I got on their mailing list and that’s a good thing because now I receive their beautiful brochure.

It is designed by Françoise Beck, who has a very nice site and a blog you really should visit.

Alright, I’m a dinosaur. Show me something like this and I don’t know whether to stop drooling or start ranting about the good old days when things to read were made out of paper… ah, paper!

What we see here is some kind of magazine, but I wonder what it could look like if it was a comic book? The specific properties of comics, being a visual storytelling medium with static, juxtaposed images (roughly the Scott McCloud definition if I remember correctly) seem to fit awkwardly with all the moving around which is made possible with these. And when the pictures start moving, at which point is it going to stop being a comic?

Or am I thinking too much like a dinosaur again?

Docu: Kilgallen and McGee 13:04

Yesterday I saw this video on the Kitsune Noir blog. It’s a short documentary on Margaret Kilgallen and Barry McGee. I vaguely remember seeing some of Kilgallen’s work in a magazine somewhere, but actually I must admit it never really struck a chord…until now that is. Is it the video? Is it the fact that sometimes you just need to see the person behind the work? Or Is it a matter of right time, right place? Maybe I wasn’t ready to appreciate it at that time?

I’m not really sure what to say about this right now. Maybe I’ll come back to it later. For now, let’s just enjoy this very nice little docu.
