Odio (Hatred)

Magical Snap - 2011.05.22 16.15 - 013

A documentary about Victor, a talented street artist from Valparaiso, Chile. Not a happy guy. Restless. Confused, maybe. Not sure where he wants to go, who he wants to be. He marks the streets with his tag “Odio”, which means “hatred”. And yet, all the while, there’s his soft spoken voice, carefully choosing his words…

Made by Norwegian film students in Chile in 2010.

Eric Dolphy Graphic Novel

Magical Snap - 2011.05.26 12.34 - 055

Comics and Jazz. We seem to keep returning to this happy combination of art forms…

Yesterday, Mr. Keith H. Brown told me he was planning on making a graphic novel about Eric Dolphy. Looks like an interesting project. The artwork is not only reminiscent of 40’s and 50’s album cover art, but also has a distinct feel of its own. I particularly like Mr. Brown’s “line”: full of life, searching, but not hesitant.

Check out the Kickstarter-video below. he’s still looking for people to back him up…

Milton Glaser on Fear of Failure

Magical Snap - 2011.05.22 19.12 - 028

The Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm, Sweden has put up a site around its 2011 exhibition which focuses on the topic of failure and how overcoming fear of failure is the only path if you’re aiming for success. The site features a series of video interviews with people like Michael Wolff, Stefan Sagmeister and even Paulo Coelho (amongst many others) but the best one, I found, was the one with the ever eloquent Milton Glaser.

Akira Nagasawa

nagasawa_04

The Mythical creatures Akira Nagasawa refers to as “tigers” verge on the edge of abstraction. Sometimes they unmistakably are indeed tigers, but often they could just as well be any sort of feline creature made out of not much more than a few shapes which, yes, could be some kind of cat, perhaps…

But always, always, they are powerful and mysterious and primitive. Painted in earth tones and royal reds and blues and golds. Grinning and looking stupid like only a mythical tiger dares to look nowadays.

Are you gonna tell him he looks stupid?

Didn’t think so.

Tim Enthoven: Binnenskamers

Tonight, Dutch illustrator and comic creator Tim Enthoven presents his new comic book at the Bries Space in Antwerp (Belgium). This small but always surprising new venue for graphic art will be transformed into the room of the graphic novella. If you are in the neighborhood, go check out the original drawings shown there. The exhibition only runs for today, tomorrow and Sunday, but the artist will be present the whole three days.

The comic book seems to be the kind of delightfully experimental comic publisher Bries really has a knack for. I haven’t read it yet, but it looked mighty promising. To wet your appetite, here are some pages from the book…

PressPausePlay

Magical Snap - 2011.05.08 14.13 - 042

I stumbled across the trailer for PressPausePlay for the first time this weekend whilst the film has already seen its debut on film festivals since March this year. Shows you how up-to-date I really am, doesn’t it…

Anyway, I think this might well be a very very interesting documentary. It deals with the the impact of digital media on culture and seems to present the pros as well as the cons (hence the “hope” and “fear” in its byline). Check out the trailer, but also take a look at both of the other two videos which illustrate these two points of view well.

If you can’t get enough, visit www.ericsson.com/campaign/presspauseplay to find a whole lot of short little video interviews on the subject. People featured here and in the film include Moby, Seth Godin, Andrew Keen, Scott Belsky and Hillman Curtis, amongst many other well known creators of this digital era.

And best of all: somewhere this summer the whole docu should appear online, for free.

For now: take a look at these to wet your appetite…
