Student of the blog, part 2

werner_kleur_052

It’s been a long day. I’ve been working on cartoons for the city of Antwerp (when they’re finished I’ll show some of them) and I’m still trying to figure out all these blog-thingies. The Windows Live Writer turns out to be a nice editor, much better then the original blogger-editor which doesn’t allow for much editing at all.
I noticed there was a slight difference between how my blog looked in Firefox (perfect) and Internet Explorer (all wrong). I managed to make it a little better by tinkering with the HTML, but it isn’t as it should be quite yet. Of course, I know didley  squat about HTML… I just hope I’m not causing the internet to explode or something.

Foodie-typography

My girlfriend is a cook in a little restaurant. When there is a “special of the day”-menu she usually wants me to make a sign to announce it. Unfortunately she almost always forgets to tell me about this right until we are supposed to go to sleep…

Nevertheless I really enjoy making these things. I consider them a nice little exercise in typography.

Video greetingcard

My girlfriend received some video's in her mail today, holiday greetings from some of her colleagues from the multimedia computerclasses she's been following. They showed idyllic images of their home and garden, covered in snow, with Bing Crosby for soundtrack.  How could we possible send them something in return as most of the snow had melted by now?

Made in a few hours in the afternoon of christmasday, and yes the ugly chap with the unwashed hair is me.

Greetingcards

Here are the christmas greetingcards I made this year.

I got some help from a friend who went out to the park on a beautiful afternoon to take pictures. When he send them to me I used Gimp to manipulate the photographs and create a more graphic image. When I send the results back to him he hated the lot of them... "There's no christmas feel in these cards!" he said, "They are all cold and wrong and just no good...".

My favourite is the blueish green and purple one with the sun.

I'll try and make a little tutorial on how I made the cards sometime soon.

White Christmas !

It's christmas-night and it's raining. Not snowing. Raining. Well, there is still some snow on the ground in the garden and in our street (we live at the end of a dead-end street, so unlike the rest of the world we are not surrounded by grey slush. Yet.

I think this is the closest I've ever come to a "white christmas". I remember some old fotographs from when I was a kid, posing in front of a christmastree outside. In my memory there was snow in that picture, but I'm not really sure anymore. Maybe my mom still has it somewhere... Anyway, I am pretty sure it wasn't christmasday when that picture was taken, so I doesn't count as a white christmas.

In case you couldn't tell already, I really like christmas. And I insist that everybody else around me likes it as much as I do. And nobody does. They don't seem to care wether there's a nice tree in the livingroom. They don't seem to enjoy the cardsending and the music and the lights in the street. The worst among them do seem to enjoy bitching and moaning about how dreadful the holliday season really is, and how dispicable the commercial side of it all... Blahblahblah...

I think I am gonna let this count as a "white" christmas. It could have been whiter, I guess, but hey...

Merry Christmas, everybody! Try to enjoy it...

Student of the blog

Over the past few weeks I've been stumbling along, trying to figure out this blog-thing. I've never done this before and up 'till about a year ago I didn't even own a computer and was barely capable of sending an email and googling the bus schedule.

I find it particularly hard to layout text and pictures in a post. I found some tutorials and advice which all point in to the direction of HTML, so I guess I've got myself some more studying to do... In the meanwhile, just bare with me, please.

Drawing on the wall

I was in Ghent last week when I noticed a nice drawing on a wall. Maybe it's just me, but isn't it true that there are very few drawings to be seen in the street? Most pictures are photographs, and most graffiti are just words. Or ugly.

So the next day I brought a little camera I borrowed from my girlfriend. I must admit I didn't really know how to use it all that well, so forgive me if some of the following pictures aren't quite what they should be. I'll figure out how to use auto-focus some day soon... I promise.

The first picture shows the drawing I saw that first day, and it's still my favourite. It has this nice "distressed" quality, like it's been there for ages. And it looks like it's not quite finished. Maybe whoever made it got interupted?

Walking around the neighbourhood I found a whole lot more of these drawings, some clearly by the same artist, others most likely by someone else.

If anyone recognizes his or her own work, or knows who made these, feel free to leave a message in the comments.

Meanwhile I'll be keeping my eyes open for more of these. Maybe it could be the start of a whole collection? Or I could just post them here for you all to enjoy...
