AnotherDesignBlog

Today I would like to point you into the direction of another design blog called AnotherDesignBlog. It is regularly updated by Kathy Kavan, an English Interactive Art Director. Let’s dive into some examples of what she’s been posting…

Of course there is a whole lot of posters, ads, covers for books and magazines and other sorts of graphics. More often than not they demonstrate her love for vintage modernism and Japanese design.

Ms. Kavan also seems to be very fond of science fiction, robots, monsters and classic video games…

Sandrine Estrade Boulet

Let’s keep it short and sweet today. Sandrine Estrade Boulet lives and works in Boulogne, France. She sees the streets differently from everybody else… She takes pictures, does her magic, and hopes other people will start seeing it too…

The things that put a little smile on your face.

First animation: Fantasmagorie

Young_Emile_Cohl

Alright, alright, hold your horses!

Of course we could start arguing whether or not Fantasmagorie by Emile Cohl really is the very first animation ever. What about J. Stuart Blackton with his Humorous Phases of Funny Faces from 1906, I hear you say. Earlier attempts like the 1892 Théatre Optique of Charles-Emile Reynaud could still be discarded because they were not on standard picture film, but…

Blah blah blah.

I’m not going to list arguments for or against Cohl or Blackton or anybody else. Frankly, I don’t really care. What I do care about is that Fantasmagorie, in my humble opinion, is the very first nice animated film ever. I mean, have you seen Humorous Phases of Funny Faces? The title is actually the only thing remotely funny about it!

Emile Cohl's film only runs for a bit longer than a minute, but it’s jam-packed with fast moving images and scenes which together form a stream of consciousness styled story. It’s silent, it doesn’t even have music, but it’s a charming little film

Take a look and see what you think…

Ira Glass on Storytelling

Ira Glass hosts a weekly hour-long radio show called “This American Life” in which he presents surprising, true stories. These stories are journalistic and non-fiction, but nevertheless they require good storytelling for them to be interesting.

The following four short videos (just over 15 minutes all together) show Glass talking about storytelling. It’s simple, but very sensible advice, not only for journalists, but for everybody who’s in the business of telling stories.

Retinart

Magical Snap - 2010.06.21 13.55 - 004

While looking around for what I could find on the net regarding Reid Miles (see this previous post), I soon came across the Retinart-blog. Man, oh man… What a nice one!

Retinart is written by Alex Charchar, a graphic designer from Australia. The blog seems to have been dormant for a while, but now Mr. Charchar is back on track, presenting us with two lengthy posts a week. He really takes his time to flesh out a topic, which makes Retinart first and foremost a blog to read, not just skim through. Add to that the fact that this is one of the more beautifully designed blogs I’ve seen in a while and you will understand why I only reluctantly point you into Mr. Charchar’s direction for a visit, afraid you wont be back anytime soon…

To wet your appetite: a selection of the headers he designs for each article (which will also give you some idea of the topics being discussed).
